Michael Ericson, 10, bowls using the Xbox Kinect Tuesday at Bright Field Middle School in Bentonville during the Technology Showcase. Michael’s school, Cooper Elementary School, has a Xbox Kinect lab with 12 stations for students to use during physical education class. The lab was created in partnership with Microsoft.

Mabel Wise, left, and Mallory Price, both Eastside Elementary School firstgraders, get a hug from Clifford the Big Red Dog during a visit Tuesday, courtesy of the Arkansas Educational Television Network. The two earned the canine’s visit for placing well in the PBS Kids Go! Writing Contest. Mabel took first place among first-graders in statewide competition for her story, “The Dancing Zebra.” Mallory placed third with her entry, “A Cat Party.” The two are in Lourdes Kinney’s class at Eastside. Mabel’s story will advance to national competition. The contest encourages students in kindergarten through third grade to write and illustrate stories.

Abby Newman, 10, lowers her ponytail Tuesday at Happy Hollow Elementary School in Fayetteville as physical education teacher Erin Rains adjusts a helmet for her. The third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students are participating in Bike Ed, a hands-on program started by the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks to teach students how to ride a bicycle responsibly. The students watched safety videos, walked an obstacle course and were fitted with helmets Tuesday. In the next couple of days the students will have the opportunity to practice skills learned on a course.
