Construction crews work on removing a layer of asphalt on the Lafayette Street bridge in Fayetteville WEdnesday morning. The construction is part of an ongoing project to restore the bridges, which run over the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad tracks between Gregg and West Avenue and were built in the 1930s by the New Deal-era Works Progress Administration. Chris Brown, city engineer, said removing asphalt will allow engineers with McClelland Consulting Engineers to test the concrete decks of both bridges for structural soundness. Brown said no other street closures are planned during the design phase of the project. Construction will likely begin in spring 2014, he added.
