Beth Zabinsky, Eastside Elementary School teacher, shows one of several varieties of flowers and plants the school’s second-graders sold Wednesday, the first day of Eastside’s annual plant sale. Students grew the plants in the school’s greenhouse and are selling them this week to raise money to continue the plant project and other needs at the Rogers school. The public is invited to purchase plants before and after school today and Friday, at 505 E. New Hope Road, as long as there are plants to sell. Hours are 7:15-7:45 a.m., or 2:45-3:05 p.m. Zabinsky said the plant sale, in its ninth year, raises $2,000-$2,500. Students use math and business skills in the project, as well as learning about plants.

Richard Peek of Alabama shows a heavyweight largemouth bass he caught April 12 during the Walmart FLW Tour bass tournament at Beaver Lake. Game & Fish fisheries biologist Ron Moore said FLW anglers caught so many quality largemouth bass this year because of an excellent spawn in 2008 when the lake level was extremely high. Moore decided to raise largemouth bass in the Beaver Lake nursery pond this year in anticipation of lower water levels during spawning time this year and possibly next year.
