Jordan Mendoza, bottom, Pablo Pinales and Caidyn Sulffridge, all from Parson Hills Elementary School, howl like coyotes Friday morning with the performance of country and western singer Marshall Mitchell at the school in Springdale. The first-graders were participating in the annual Economics Stick Horse Rodeo that used cowboy themes to teach lessons including scarcity and opportunity. Because of the rain, activities were moved from Parsons Stadium back to the 17 elementary schools that participated.

Aroldo Gabriel, 19, front, and Dalton Pistubbee, 16, both students in the Information Technology Academy, work on applications for Android devices Wednesday at Springdale High School. The IT Academy is one of five course-centralized programs for students at the high school. Students who want to focus in a specific area such as business, computer science, medicine, law, engineering or International Baccalaureate can participate in one of the academies in order to get a jump start in their knowledge of those areas.

Deric Subbert, a Centerton firefighter, rolls up a section of fire hose Saturday after working the scene of a fiery two-vehicle accident on Arkansas 102 near Coffelt Cemetery Road west of Centerton. Heath Alsip of Gentry was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville for injuries suffered in the accident. According to State Police Officer Jesse Woodham, Alsip’s vehicle crossed the center of the highway and collided with a delivery flatbed truck being driven by Meeks Lumber employee Daniel Cantu, who escaped his burning vehicle without injury.
