Kim Barnes of Springdale stands with demonstrators Tuesday afternoon at the corner of Dickson Street and College Avenue in Fayetteville in support of gay rights and same sex marriage. The gathering was organized by the Northwest Arkansas Center for Equality on the day that the Supreme Court is hearing the challenge to California’s Proposition 8, the state’s voter-approved gay marriage ban. Pierce is a student in the pre-advance placement biology class participating in the field study. The cannula gave the students access to the rumen, front part of the digestive system, in the steer.

Six U.S. Army Corps of Engineers parks will open for the season Monday, including Prairie Creek, Hickory Creek, Horseshoe Bend, Lost Bridge North, Dam Site Lake and Dam Site River, said Michael Hurley at the corps’ Beaver Lake office. Parks that will open May 1 are War Eagle, Rocky Branch, Lost Bridge South, Starkey and Indian Creek.
