Kimberly Burgess, left, reacts Wednesday after discovering she and Fred Ruger had been evicted from their home during a poverty simulation at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville. About 100 local leaders, business representatives, college staff and students participated in the event, sponsored by Arkansas Career Pathways. The event offered an opportunity to experience what it’s like for low-income families and individuals to survive month-to-month on low wages, social services and government assistance. Ruger played the role of 19-year-old single mother of a 1-year-old child living with her 25-year-old boyfriend, a GED recipient and recent parolee, played by Burgess.
