Emergency responders look over the scene after a Fayetteville school bus struck a delivery truck about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The accident occurred on Huntsville Road west of Roberts Road. The bus was carrying 33 students from McNair Middle School and Happy Hollow Elementary School. A 10-year-old girl was transported to Washington Regional Medical Center, and a 9-year-old girl, who complained of neck and knee pain, was picked up by parents for evaluation. The bus driver, Steven Marchese, 62, of Fayetteville, and the driver of a Garner Meat Co. delivery truck, F. Thomas Allison, 61, of Fort Smith, were not injured. Marchese told police he was checking his rear-view mirror to make sure students were in their seats. The accident happened after the bus driver looked back at the road and saw he was too close to the truck to stop, police said. Another bus went to the scene and transported the remaining students to their homes. Fayetteville police cited Marchese for careless driving.
