Nicholas Van Slooten, 14, speaks Wednesday about low income for teachers at the Arend Arts Center at Bentonville High School during a speech contest hosted by the Bentonville Rotary Club and the Bentonville/Bella Vista Daybreak Rotary Club. Five students competed by applying Rotary International’s four-way test to a topic of their choice. The four-way test asks, “Of the things we think, say or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?” Students had between 4 minutes, 45 seconds and 7 minutes, 15 seconds to address their topic. The winner, Van Slooten, will compete at the state level to be one of three Arkansas students eligible to compete at the District Assembly for Rotary District 6110 in April.
